Throughout Dr. Fehlings’ career he has been active in promoting and mentoring trainees. This commitment has led him to become the Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto (UofT) and Co-Director of the UofT Spine Program, where he founded the first interdisciplinary spine program in North America. Dr. Fehlings also co-ordinates the Surgeon-Scientist Training Program at UofT which oversees graduate education in research.

Dr. Fehlings has mentored 46 post-doctoral fellows, 40 graduate students and over 200 clinical spine fellows and residents from around the globe. In 2016 he was honoured with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Mentor Award and The Charles H. Tator Surgeon-Scientist Mentoring Award.
